By the end of this week, your baby is likely about the size of the tip of a pen.

Your baby is considered a “blastocyst”; by the time it reaches the uterus, the rapidly dividing ball of cells — right after conception was known as a zygote, but now already known as a blastocyst — has separated into two sections, and has implanted into your uterine wall. It is the inner group of cells that is considered your actual baby. The outer group of cells have begun to form the membranes of the placenta.  It is the detection of this microscopic, very early placenta which triggers hormonal changes and a positive pregnancy test.

In week 5, the inner group of cells, your actual baby, has divided into 3 layers; each of these layers are the foundation for particular body development.

  1. A friend of mine shared this site with me. I’ve know for a week that I am pregnant and my husband and I were so excited, this was our first pregnancy and our first adimt at having a baby. I downloaded a baby app and followed it every day to see the new things happening inside me and with my baby and I would share the info with my husband and he was just as excited as I was. Tonight though I had to leave work and go to the ER to find out that I had lost my baby. As sad and as heartbroken as I am right now I know it wouldn’t have happened if something wasn’t wrong with my baby. All of my blood work came back better than most young women my age and he was impressed with that. Nature has a funny way of sorting life out and I’m okay with that. Maybe my baby was sick, or maybe it just wasn’t the right time for our little one to be with us yet, I don’t know. But what I do know is that I love him just the same (my husband and I both felt like the baby was a boy). The love I felt this week for something so tiny that I couldn’t even feel or see yet was indescribable. This site, and my wonderful ER nurse Eric have been a blessing for me tonight thank you so much.
